Sustainability

700 million people on the African continent without access to clean and safe drinking water.

Contaminated water is responsible for the transmission of diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio – with around half a million deaths from diarrhoea alone.

Over the years any number of attempts and billions of dollars have been eaten up trying to address this issue, but the majority fail due to the lack of long-term, -sustainable solutions.

On a recent trip to one small region of Ghana, Stephen Thorp, our founder, discovered over 100 either seized or abandoned boreholes – this is all too common. Frequently, large sums of money are handed to local NGO’s who drill a borehole, attach a handpump on top and, after the ribbon cutting consider it to be ‘job done’. Sadly this is not the case – boreholes and pumps require regular maintenance. Plus, come the rainy season, the effluence from the ‘long drops’ often enters the water table and the locals end up pumping contaminated water causing frequent outbreaks of waterborne disease.
